Find Spotify's AI Playlist feature and generate a custom playlist from a conversational description.

What Spotify Labs Actually Does

Spotify Labs is where the AI playlist maker lives, and the core idea is simple. You type what you want and it builds a playlist around it.

The prompt works like a chat. I told it I was going to Sicily, pasted rough notes about my itinerary, and asked for music that fit the place. Seconds later I had something I could play on the walk there.

Under the hood it combines your request with your own listening data, so the result leans toward things you would actually like [3]. That is the part that makes it feel less like a search and more like a suggestion from someone who knows your taste.

How To Find It And Use It

Finding it is the hardest part, and it is still easy. Tap the "+" button in the top-right of the app, then select "AI Playlist" [1].

From there you get suggested prompts or a blank box. The blank box is where the good stuff happens. Vague prompts give vague results, so I treat it like briefing a person who has never met me.

Instead of "happy music" I write "upbeat acoustic songs for a slow Sunday morning making coffee." The detail is what pulls a sharper playlist out of it.

Why Specific Moments Work Best

The feature rewards context. A trip, a dinner, a long drive at night - these give the AI something real to anchor to.

My read is that this is the actual shift. For years playlists were things you built song by song or accepted from an algorithm you never spoke to. Now you can describe a moment and get the soundtrack for it.

The Sicily example stuck with me because I was not looking for a genre. I was looking for a feeling tied to a place, and plain language handled that better than any search bar could.

The Part Worth Being Honest About

It is not magic, and it does not always nail the first try. Sometimes the mood is right but a few tracks feel off.

That is fine, because the playlist is fully yours once it is made. You can save it, edit it, swap songs, and share it [5]. I usually generate, then cut the three tracks that do not fit and keep the rest.

Spotify sits on a catalog of around 70 million songs [4], so the raw material is there. The AI is just a faster way to reach into it than scrolling ever was. Treat the output as a strong first draft and you will get a lot out of it.
