# Gamma.app: Turning Text Into Slide Decks Without the PowerPoint Grind

**Topic:** AI Tools

A grounded look at how Gamma.app builds presentations from text using AI, and where it actually fits in a real workflow. What it does well, what it doesn't, and how I pair it with ChatGPT.

## The short version

- Gamma turns a text prompt into a full slide deck in seconds
- Upload your own theme so decks match your fonts and colors
- Pairing it with ChatGPT handles the writing and the design in one flow
- It's strongest for internal decks and drafts, weaker for heavy data slides
- Export to Google Slides so your team can still edit and share

## The manual deck is the slowest part of any idea

Building slides by hand is where good thinking goes to die. You have the argument in your head, then you spend two hours dragging text boxes and fixing alignment.

Gamma flips the order. You write the content first, and the tool handles the layout. It generates a full presentation from a single prompt, which means the part that used to take an afternoon now takes a few seconds.

My read is that this matters most for the decks nobody enjoys making. Internal updates, quick pitches, workshop material. The stuff you'd rather not touch PowerPoint for at all.

## Feeding it your own theme is the step people skip

Uploading your theme is what separates a generic AI deck from one that looks like yours. Gamma can read your colors, your fonts, and how you tend to lay things out, then apply that across every slide it builds.

Without that step you get clean but slightly anonymous results. The default themes are fine but basic, and reviewers have said the same. A ten-minute setup fixes it.

Do it once and every future deck inherits the look. That's the part I'd tell anyone to sort before they generate their first real presentation.

## The real power is chaining it with another AI

Gamma gets much better when it isn't doing the thinking. I use ChatGPT to summarize a long document or draft the argument, then paste that structured text straight into Gamma.

One tool handles the words. The other handles turning them into something you can present. The handoff is where the speed actually comes from.

Here's a practical example. Take a messy 15-page report, ask ChatGPT to pull out the five key points with supporting detail, then drop that into Gamma. You get a shaped deck instead of a wall of bullet points you'd have to redesign anyway.

## Where it falls short, and where it wins

Gamma is not the answer for everything. It struggles with complex data and detailed charts, and for high-stakes client work it can look a little too templated straight out of the box.

So I keep expectations honest. It's built for fast first drafts, internal decks, and web-shared content. That covers a surprising amount of what most people actually make.

When the polish has to be perfect, treat Gamma as the draft engine and finish elsewhere. Export to Google Slides and let a human tighten the last ten percent. That's usually the sweet spot.
