# Chrome Search Shortcuts: Search Any Site From Your Address Bar

**Topic:** Productivity

A practical walkthrough of Chrome's custom site search shortcuts. Set them up once and search YouTube, Drive, and Maps without ever loading the homepage first.

## The short version

- Chrome lets you search any site directly from the address bar with a custom keyword.
- Setup lives under Settings, Search engine, Manage search engines and site search.
- Type your keyword, hit Tab, then search inside YouTube or Drive instantly.
- Skipping the homepage load is small per search but adds up fast across a week.

## The habit that quietly wastes your time

Most people open YouTube, wait for the homepage to load, then start typing in the search box. Two steps that feel like nothing.

Do that twenty times a day and the loading screens stack up. Each homepage pulls thumbnails, recommendations, a feed you never asked for.

The address bar already knows how to search. You just have to teach it where to point.

## Where the setting actually lives

Open Chrome, click the three dots in the top right, then Settings. On the left, choose Search engine, then Manage search engines and site search.

This is the same path Google's own support docs lay out, so it should look familiar even if the menu wording shifts slightly between versions.

Scroll to the site search section. That is where your shortcuts get built, and where the few that Chrome already added live.

## How a shortcut actually works

A shortcut is three parts: a name, a keyword, and the search URL with %s where your query goes.

My setup for YouTube uses "yt" as the keyword. I type yt, hit Tab, and the address bar flips into YouTube search mode. Whatever I type next runs as a real YouTube search.

The %s is the placeholder. Chrome swaps your text in where %s sits, so the URL needs to match the site's normal search address. Easiest way to grab it is to search something on the site once and copy the resulting URL.

## The ones worth setting up first

Start with the sites you open daily. For me that is YouTube, Google Drive, and Maps.

Drive is the quiet winner. Searching files from the address bar instead of waiting for Drive to load and render every folder saves real seconds, and it kills the temptation to scroll through folders by hand.

Maps works the same way. Keyword, Tab, type a place, done. No homepage, no centering on your current location first.

## A small caveat before you go wide

Not every site exposes a clean search URL, and a few hide it behind scripts that won't slot into the %s format. That is the catch with the manual route.

My read is that it does not matter much. The handful of sites you actually live in every day almost always work, and those are the ones worth the two minutes.

Set up three or four, use them for a week, and the muscle memory does the rest. You stop reaching for bookmarks without noticing you stopped.
